“Freaks and Geeks”
Donald Glover is a very talented person (actor, rapper, writer, comedian, DJ) and he had one hell of a 2011. At the beginning of the year he released a free EP where this track is from and a few weeks ago put out a full length record — Camp. In between the music and staring in NBC’s Community he toured the country performing stand up and Childish Gambino music. His most recent project is a stand up special on Comedy Central, Weirdo. Hopefully he hasn’t burned himself out for 2012!
I’m not a huge fan of Camp, but I don’t really agree with the review, but the use of this .gif cracked me up!

When I enter my full name into the Wu-Tang Name Generator I’m given “Big Gay Mule” which isn’t nearly as cool as “Childish Gambino.” That’s the name actor/comedian Donald Glover was awarded when used said generator. He liked that title so much that he decided to use it as is hip-hop moniker instead of his full name so that people don’t think his music is comedy music ala Lonely Island or Flight of the Concords. Glover is a talented and busy individual — he got his start in the Derrick comedy group, graduated from NYU, wrote for 30 Rock, wrote/produced the movie Mystery Team, stars as Troy on NBC’s Community, DJs, raps, and now performs stand up too! That’s a pretty impressive list of achievements for a 27 year old.
Childish Gambino has been releasing music for free via his blog since 2008. His output has been pretty massive since then, featuring a couple of full length albums of original material and a handful of mixtapes where he raps over indie songs (Animal Collective, Sleigh Bells, Grizzly Bear, etc.). A lot of the links to these recordings are either hard to find or broken, so from “Freaks and Geeks” to early DJ work here is a quick roundup of all of the albums, EPs, mixtapes, and singles that have been published on the web so far.

I recently went on a little road trip to our nation’s capital to see Donald Glover’s IAMDONALD tour with @kimmypoooo, @mfranklin313, and @chelseyrovo. He did a little bit of stand up, then he did about an hour’s worth of his music as Childish Gambino. The show was fantastic, the stand-up was significantly better than I expected. As a hip-hop performer his set was much more engaging than normal live hip-hop shows. Having a live band helped a lot.
On each road trip I take I like to pass my iPod around in the car and have everyone select tracks for an on-the-go playlist. I’m going to start posting those mixes to my blog since I usually remove them from y iPod.
